Directions to
Monkchester show venue A1 from the south
On A1 pass Washington Services. Keep in the left hand lane. Sign
posted A1 junction 65. Keep left once round bend get into left hand lane signed
for A167 Gateshead (south). On Slip road you need right hand lane. At Roundabout
take 3rd Exit. You will pass the Angel of the North on your left. Follow road
ahead (shops on both sides) through all sets of traffic lights. You will pass
Gateshead College on your left, follow road ahead but move into right hand lane
at traffic lights opposite Springfield Hotel. Through the
traffic lights follow road ahead. You will pass a speed camera in centre of
road. Keep to the right and go up over the fly-over and onto Tyne Bridge A167.
Keep in the left hand lane and travel through underpass. Then immediately left
onto slip road for A193 Wallsend. At roundabout turn right (3rd exit) exiting in
the right hand lane. Straight through traffic lights (at W.B. Cinema - on left).
Straight ahead through 2 sets of traffic lights. Over Byker Bridge. At
roundabout go straight ahead ( 2nd Exit) A193. Get into right
hand lane for next roundabout take 4th exit B1314. You will pass HSS Hire on
your left. At next roundabout turn left down Welbeck Road. Through traffic
calming, take the 3rd road on your right (at Lloyds Pharmacy). This is
Monkchester Road. Follow road ahead over 3 Speed humps, just before post-box
turn left (at blue sign for Monkchester Community Centre). This alley opens up
into a large car park with the centre on your right.
Directions to Monkchester show venue from Tyne Tunnel (A19
from the south)
Come out of Tunnel and at roundabout go straight ahead. Next
roundabout turn right signposted for Segedunum. A187. Next roundabout straight
over. Follow road ahead - you will pass huge AMEC buildings on your left. Next
roundabout straight over. Follow road - you will pass Segedunum and big red
cranes on your left. Next roundabout straight over. Next roundabout (is in a
dip) bear of to the right. Straight ahead. Next roundabout turn left. Next
roundabout straight over. You will pass Booker Cash & Carry on your left. Keep
on this road, you will then pass the Stack Pub on your right. Follow road and
you will go through a couple of sets of traffic lights. You will then come
towards a big billboard above a green shop. Turn right here onto Monkchester
Road (just before pedestrian crossing). You will then have a School on your
left. Follow road ahead until you pass some small shops on your left and the
road narrows you will see a red post box. You need the small turning on your
right (blue sign on lamppost to Monkchester Community Centre). Once you turn
down this alley it will open into a large car park with the centre on your
right.
Directions to Monkchester venue from A69 (west)
At roundabout where A69 meets the A1 turn left onto the A1
heading north. Stay in left hand lane and leave at next exit (signed Westerhope).
At roundabout at top of slip road turn right (A167) and follow this road over
all roundabouts and Through all traffic lights until it turns from dual
carriageway into single carriageway and goes up a hill with houses on either
side (Stamfordham Rd). At the top of the hill there is a small roundabout which
you go straight over but in the right hand lane. You will immediately come to a
large roundabout where again you go straight over (2nd exit) still A167 - you
are now heading towards Newcastle's central motorway. Stay on the A167 ignoring
all exits until you pass a scissor junction with a left hand slip off towards
Tynemouth (A1058). Ignore this but get ready to take the next slip road off
(signed city centre, A193 Wallsend) and at the roundabout turn left (first exit)
exiting in the right hand lane. Go straight through traffic lights (at W.B.
Cinema - on left). Straight ahead through 2 sets of traffic lights. Over Byker
Bridge. At roundabout go straight ahead ( 2nd Exit) A193. Get into right hand
lane for next roundabout take 4th exit B1314. You will pass HSS Hire on your
left. At next roundabout turn leftdown Welbeck Road. Through traffic calming,
take the 3rd road on your right (at Lloyds Pharmacy). This is Monkchester Road.
Follow road ahead over 3 Speed humps, just before post-box turn left (at blue
sign for Monkchester Community Centre). This alley opens up into a large car
park with the centre on your right.
Directions to Monkchester venue from A1 (from the north)
Follow A1 to the Airport exit (A696), and slip off to
roundabout-turn left (first exit) onto A167 (dual carriageway). Follow road over
three roundabouts to a large roundabout with a subway centre. Turn left onto the
A167 heading towards Newcastle centre. You are now heading towards Newcastle's
central motorway. Follow instruction as in from A69 (west) above, from "Stay on
A167 ignoring all exits."
Public Transport to Monkchester venue
From Central Station, enter metro station inside the Station and
board a yellow line metro heading for either St James (via coast) or Benton.
Travel one stop to the Monument and swap onto a yellow line train heading away
from St James towards Whitley Bay. Leave the metro at Byker station and from
here you have two choices. It is about a mile walk to the venue. Or you can get
a bus from the metro station to the top of Monkchester Ave.
On foot
Leave the metro station and climb the steps in front of you,
heading for the blue cylindrical tower of East End Pool and Library. Walk right
through the pool car park heading for the McDonalds straight ahead. Just before
McDonald's turn right through the underpass (subway). When you emerge you will
be facing a large wall of flats. Turn left and follow the road around the arc to
the first small path on the left (with striped bollards across it). Take this up
to the main road. Directly opposite is HSS Hire Shop. Cross the road and turn
right. Continue to roundabout where you turn left down Welbeck Rd. Walk down
W.Rd until you reach the pet shop-cross at this point and Monkchester Rd is just
about opposite you. Head down Monkchester Rd until you see a red post box on the
left. Above it is a blue sign to the community centre. Turn down the cut as
indicated. Once you're in the car park thecentre is on your right.
By bus
Exit the metro station and turn left, walking through the
covered shopping arcade with Safeway on your left. As you emerge onto the high
street turn left. You need to cross the road-the bus stop is immediately
opposite Netto. You want either the 39 or 40-so choose the right bus stop! Once
on board the bus will go to the top of the high street and up to a large
roundabout where it will turn right past the HSS Hire shop. At the next
roundabout it will turn left. Almost immediately there is a bus stop. You want
the next one after this. Once you've alighted walk down the road in the
direction the bus was heading until you reach the petshop. Cross over and
Monkchester Rd is the road that is almost opposite. Head down Monkchester Rd
until you see a red post box on the left. Above it is a blue sign to the
community centre. Turn down the cut as indicated. Once you're in the car park
the centre is on your right.
